Share a USB Printer Over LAN on Windows 11
Step-by-step guide for home & small office networks
Sharing a USB printer across your local network allows multiple computers to print without needing a dedicated print server. Windows 11 makes this process simple — you only need to configure sharing on the computer that the printer is physically connected to (the Host PC) and then connect to it from other systems (Client PCs).
In this guide, we will walk you through the complete process.
Step 1: Install the Printer on the Host Computer
- Connect your USB printer to the host computer.
- Power it on.
- Install the printer driver if required.
- Windows 11 may auto-detect the printer, or you may need to install the driver manually via manufacturer software.
Once installed, confirm that you can print locally before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Enable Printer Sharing
- Open Control Panel
- Press
Win + R→ type control → Enter
- Press
- Go to:
Hardware & Sound → Devices & Printers → Printers & Scanners - Select the USB printer you want to share.
- Open Printer Properties → go to Sharing tab
- Check Share this printer
- Give the printer a recognizable network name
- Go to the Security tab
- Ensure Everyone has permission to print
The printer is now configured for network sharing.
Step 3: Enable Network Discovery & Sharing
- Right-click the Network icon → Network and Internet Settings
- Click Properties
- Ensure the network type is Private
- Go back to Network & Internet
- Select Advanced Network Settings
- Open Advanced Sharing Settings
- Under Private Network
✅ Network discovery → ON
✅ File & printer sharing → ON - Under All Networks
✅ Password-protected sharing → ON
- Under Private Network
These settings allow other computers to discover and connect securely to the shared printer.
Step 4: Create a Printer User on Host PC
To allow proper authentication, create a dedicated user account.
- Open Computer Management
- Press
Win + X→ Computer Management
- Press
- Navigate to:
Local Users & Groups→ Users - Right-click Users → New User
- Create a new username + password
Example:- Username:
printeruser - Password:
********
- Username:
This account will be used to authenticate from client computers.
Step 5: Connect to Shared Printer from Client PC
- Open File Explorer
- Expand Network
- Turn on file sharing if prompted (choose Private network)
- You should now see the Host Computer name in the list.
- Double-click the host computer
- Enter the username and password from Step 4
- Check Remember credentials
- You will now see the shared printer.
- Double-click the printer
- If prompted, re-enter credentials
- Windows will install required drivers
- After installation completes, perform a Test Print
Your client computer can now print over the network.
Done! You Can Now Print Over LAN
You have successfully shared a USB printer on your Windows 11 host machine and connected to it from other computers over the network. This setup is great for small offices or home networks where you want to avoid dedicated print servers.
Tips & Troubleshooting
| Issue | Fix |
|---|---|
| Printer not visible on client | Confirm Private Network + network discovery ON |
